What is AEO?
AEO, short for answer engine optimisation, is the work of getting your business named when a customer asks an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to buy from. Search marketing (SEO) wins a place on a list of links. AEO wins a mention inside one answer.

What does an AI answer look like for a buyer?
When someone asks an AI assistant best aesthetic clinic in Penang, they get one short answer that names two or three businesses, with a line on each. There is no list of ten links. The buyer reads the names, picks one and sends a WhatsApp message. The businesses not named never know the question was asked.
Ten links. The buyer clicks one and reads.
“For aesthetic clinics in Penang, Example Aesthetic Clinic and Klinik Contoh are often recommended; Glow Aesthetics has a branch in Bayan Lepas…”
Three names. The buyer picks one and messages.

For aesthetic treatments in Penang, Example Aesthetic Clinic is often recommended for doctor-led consultations in Georgetown and Bayan Lepas, with pico laser prices listed per session. Klinik Contoh is another well-reviewed option for acne treatment…
Named is what buyers act on. Quoted means the AI also links to your website as its source. We track both, because quoted shows the AI trusts your pages, and named shows the buyer heard of you.
How does an AI decide which businesses to name?
An AI assistant answers by reading web pages its bots can fetch, picking sentences that answer the question directly, and cross-checking what it finds against reviews, directories and articles. A business gets named when its own pages say clearly what it does and where, and other sites say the same thing.
Only what the bot can reach and read as plain text.
The first lines that answer the question get quoted.
Other sites must say the same thing before you are named.
Three things follow from that. First, the AI can only quote what its bots can read, so a page the bots can't reach does not exist to it. Second, the AI lifts sentences, not whole pages, so a page that opens with the answer gets quoted more than a page that opens with a welcome message. Third, most of what the AI says about a business comes from sites the business does not own, so reviews and listings carry weight.
A Princeton-led study tested this in 2024. Adding plain statistics, quotes from named people and cited sources to a page raised how often AI answers drew on it by about 30 to 40 percent. Stuffing a page with keywords lowered it.

Why does being named matter more than a click?
Being named matters because the buyer decides inside the answer, before visiting anyone's website. When Google shows an AI summary, people click a normal result on 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent when there is no summary. The names in the summary get the enquiry, and the rest get no visit, no click, nothing in their analytics.

That is also why AEO is hard to see from inside a business. Nothing in your visitor numbers shows the questions you were not named for. The only way to know is to ask the AI engines the questions yourself and count.
Who needs AEO?
AEO matters most to businesses that customers choose by asking around: dental and aesthetic clinics, accountants and tax advisers, law firms, ISO consultants and other professional services. In Southeast Asia, 24 percent of consumers already use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude to support their shopping journey.

The questions come in the buyer's own language, so a clinic in Shah Alam is asked about in Bahasa Malaysia as often as in English, and an accounting firm in Singapore may be asked about in 中文. An AI engine answers in the language it was asked, and it picks from the pages it can read in that language.
What does AEO work actually involve?
AEO work has three parts, done in order. Let the AI bots read your website. Make each page open with a direct answer to one real customer question, with your prices, areas and hours written as plain text. Then get other sites to say the same things about you: reviews, directories, local articles and supplier pages.
- Let AI in and start counting. Check that your website does not block AI bots, and that your text is readable without running code. Write down the 5 to 25 questions your customers ask, and ask the AI engines yourself once a month.
- Make your pages easy to quote. One page per question. Heading as the question, answer in the first two sentences, then the detail. Numbers and names, not adjectives.
- Get other sites to vouch for you. Reply to Google reviews, fix your listings so name, address, phone and hours match everywhere, and ask customers to share their experience.
The AI visibility checklist turns these into tasks you can tick off.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Expect the first change after 2 to 3 months of fixes, and steadier results after 4 to 6 months. AI engines re-read pages on their own schedule and rarely give the same answer twice, so one good week proves nothing. Ask each question several times a month and watch the count, not a single answer.
- Month 0–1FixesLet bots in, rewrite page openings, tidy listings.
- Month 2–3First changeBots re-read; a few more answers name you.
- Month 4–6SteadierOther sites catch up; the monthly count holds.
Pages that already have links from other sites and some traffic tend to move first. New pages take longer because the bots have to find them and other sites have to start mentioning them.
What can't AEO do?
AEO can't guarantee that any AI engine will name you, because each engine decides for itself and changes its sources often. It can't skip the writing: someone still has to publish the page that answers the question. What it can do is show which questions you are losing, why, and what to change first.
