AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

Search marketing (SEO) gets your website onto Google's list of links. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) gets your business named inside the single answer an AI assistant gives. You keep most of your SEO work, because AI engines read the same pages, and you add direct answers, consistent facts and mentions on other sites.

Where do SEO and AEO overlap?

SEO and AEO share the same foundation: a website that bots can read, pages that load fast, one clear topic per page, and other sites linking to or mentioning you. An AI engine reads the same pages Google does, and often starts from Google's own results. Good SEO work is not wasted; it is the first half of AEO.

Good SEO is the first half of AEO. The right side is the work you add.

Where they differ is what gets rewarded on top of that foundation. Google ranks whole pages for a keyword. An AI engine lifts individual sentences into an answer, so the opening lines of each section matter more than the page as a whole.

What does AEO need that SEO doesn't?

AEO needs four things SEO never asked for: a direct answer in the first two sentences of every section, your prices, areas and hours written as plain text, the same facts about your business on every site that lists you, and a way to count how often AI names you, because no click arrives to count.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO sits on top of SEO. An AI engine can only name a business whose pages its bots can read, and most of those pages reach it through ordinary search. Do SEO alone and you are competing for a click that, when an AI summary appears, arrives on 8 percent of visits instead of 15.

Do I need to redo my website for AEO?

Usually not. Most AEO work is rewriting the opening of each page, not rebuilding it. Turn each heading into the question a customer asks, put the answer in the first two sentences, and move the background below. Add the facts only you know, such as prices and areas served, as plain text rather than inside images or brochures.

The exception is a website whose text only appears after the page runs code. Most AI bots do not run that code, so they see an empty page. In that case the fix is technical and your web person needs to make the text part of the page itself.

How do I measure AEO when there is no click?

Measure AEO by asking. Write down the 5 to 25 questions your customers ask, put each to the AI engines several times a month, and count how many answers name you. That count, for example 9 of 40, is your score. Compare it month to month, and note which competitors are named instead and for which questions.

9/40

AI answers named you this month

Last month 5 of 40 · Named instead: Competitor A (22), Competitor B (14)

Example figures. The count is the score; the names beside it are the to-do list.

Two weaker signals help as a cross-check. Your analytics can show visits that arrive from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot, though many land unlabelled. And Google Search Console shows how often people search your business name, which tends to rise when AI starts naming you.

Which should a small business do first?

Do both on the same pages, starting with the questions that bring the most business. Fix bot access first, because nothing else counts without it. Then rewrite the opening of your five most important pages as direct answers. Then tidy your listings and reviews. A free check on 5 questions shows where you stand before you change anything.
